If hotter, more active yoga practices can be compared to music’s melodies, harmonies, crescendos and decrescendos, yin yoga is more like the drone in classical Indian music, tethering all the disparate parts into a single pulse with its four simple strings. If we apply that metaphor to our yoga practice, this dance with our inner metronome tethers us to a reflective, quiet, aware practice, one of repair and revitalization to the energy body. Applying yin’s long, slow 3-5 minute poses with guided breath techniques, we’ll tone down the autonomic nervous system’s tendency to stay hyped up, stressed out, and ready to go (even if it is for good purpose...like more yoga)! With time, stillness and gravity we’ll meet our personal metronome ...and widen into more spacious dialogue with the inner terrain of being.
